Switching energy meters ‘could help debt management’

Changing energy tariffs could help some of Britain’s poorest households with their debt management, one industry expert has advised.

According to Karen Darby, founder of SimplySwitch.com, changing to a standard credit meter may help the most financially vulnerable people in the country manage their finances better and make loan repayments.

Ms Darby claimed that by switching from a prepayment meter could help those reported to be in "fuel poverty".

She said: "It may be summer and energy prices may be falling, but with a recent estimate that three million people in Britain are struggling to pay their energy bills, the issue needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency."

Meanwhile, changing meters could "also leave consumers free to switch to the best deal available".

Scottish Power announced last week that it is to cut energy prices could help consumers make loan repayments and manage their finances, moneysupermarket.com suggested.
